A complete guide to live exchange rates, live crypto prices, and manual gold/silver spot-price math — with formulas and examples.
Currency, crypto & gold calculation means turning an amount you hold — dollars, another currency, a cryptocurrency, or a weight of precious metal — into a US-dollar value you can compare. This tool does three things: the Currency tab converts USD to nine other major currencies at a live exchange rate; the Crypto tab shows the live USD price of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Dogecoin and converts between them; the Gold & Silver tab takes a spot price you enter and computes gram, troy-ounce, and karat values instantly.
How is a live currency exchange rate used to convert an amount?
Quick answerTo convert from one currency to another, the amount is first expressed in US dollars, then converted to the target currency: Result = amount ÷ (USD→source rate) × (USD→target rate). If the source currency is USD, the first division is skipped. All rates come from Frankfurter's live feed of European Central Bank reference rates, refreshed each time you open or refresh the Currency tab.
- From currency — the currency you're converting out of (e.g. USD).
- To currency — the currency you want the result in (e.g. EUR).
- Amount — the quantity being converted; it's multiplied by the live rate.
How much is Bitcoin or Ethereum worth in dollars?
Quick answerBitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies trade around the clock on global exchanges, priced in US dollars. USD value = coin amount × live USD price per coin. This tool fetches the current price (and 24-hour change) for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Dogecoin from CoinGecko's public API, so the Crypto tab always reflects the latest available price when you load or refresh it.
The crypto converter works the same way in reverse or between two coins: an amount of one coin is first turned into its USD value, then divided by the USD price of the target coin. Because crypto prices can move sharply within minutes, treat the figures as a snapshot at the moment you loaded the page, not a locked-in rate.
How do you calculate the value of gold by weight?
Quick answerGold value = weight in grams × (spot price ÷ 31.1035) × purity fraction, where 31.1035 grams is one troy ounce. Purity depends on karat: 24K ≈ 0.999, 22K ≈ 0.9167, 18K = 0.75, 14K ≈ 0.5833, 10K ≈ 0.4167. For example, if gold spot is $2,400/oz, 10 grams of 14K gold ≈ 10 × (2400 ÷ 31.1035) × 0.5833 ≈ $450.
Silver is calculated the same way, using its own spot price and purity (fine silver .999, sterling .925, or coin silver .900 are the most common). Because there's no reliable free live feed for metals, this math only runs once you've typed in today's spot price in the Gold & Silver tab.
What is a troy ounce, and why does gold use it?
Quick answerA troy ounce is the standard weight unit for precious metals and equals about 31.1034768 grams — heavier than a regular (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.35 grams. When a gold or silver spot price is quoted "per ounce," it almost always means a troy ounce, which is why this tool's math divides by 31.1035, not 28.35.
Why isn't there a live gold or silver price in this tool?
Quick answerUnlike currency exchange and crypto markets, there is no free, reliable, no-signup API for live gold and silver spot prices. Rather than show a number that could be stale or simply wrong, this tool asks you to check today's spot price from a source you trust and type it in — then it handles every calculation for you, instantly and transparently.
