What is an age calculator, and how does it work?

A complete guide — with formulas and examples — to calculating exact age, total days lived, next-birthday countdowns, age on a specific date, and age differences between two people.

An age calculator finds the exact span of time between a date of birth and another date — usually today — and expresses it in a human-readable form: years, months, and days. Behind the scenes it's simple date arithmetic, but getting it exactly right requires accounting for different month lengths (28–31 days) and leap years (an extra day every four years). This tool also converts that span into total days, weeks, hours, and minutes, counts down live to your next birthday, and can compare two birth dates to find the difference between them. All calculations run instantly in your browser — no date is ever sent to a server.

How do you calculate age in years, months, and days?

Quick answerSubtract the birth date from today's date, then split the result into years, months, and days — borrowing a month or a year whenever the day or month count goes negative, the same way you'd borrow in subtraction. For example, someone born June 15, 1990 calculated on July 19, 2026 is 36 years, 1 month, 4 days old (2026 − 1990 = 36 years, July − June = 1 month, 19 − 15 = 4 days).
  • Formula: Age = Target date − Birth date, split into years/months/days with calendar borrowing
  • Example: Born Jun 15, 1990 → age on Jul 19, 2026 = 36y 1m 4d
  • Borrowing example: Born Aug 20, 1990 → age on Jul 10, 2026 = 35 years (not yet 36, since the birthday hasn't happened), 10 months, 21 days

How many total days, weeks, and hours have I lived?

Quick answerTotal days lived is the number of full days between your birth date and today: Total days = Today − Birth date. Total weeks are days ÷ 7 (rounded down), total hours are days × 24, and total minutes are hours × 60. Someone who is 36 years, 1 month, 4 days old has lived over 13,000 days — roughly 1,880 weeks or 313,000 hours.

This is a different way of expressing the same span of time as "years/months/days" — useful for novelty milestones (your 10,000th day alive), fitness and health tracking, or just satisfying curiosity about exactly how long you've been around.

How is the countdown to my next birthday calculated?

Quick answerThe calculator builds a date using your birth month and day in the current year; if that date has already passed, it uses next year instead. The countdown is simply Next birthday date − right now, shown live as days, hours, minutes, and seconds. If your birthday is today, the tool congratulates you instead of counting down.

How do you find your age as of a past or future date?

Quick answerUse the exact same years/months/days subtraction used for "today," but subtract the birth date from your chosen target date instead. This answers questions like "how old will I be on my wedding day?" or "how old was Person X in a historical photo dated 1955?" The Age on a Date tab handles both past and future target dates.

This calculation is commonly used for school enrollment age cutoffs, eligibility for age-restricted programs on a future date, retirement planning, or research involving historical figures and events.

How do you calculate the age difference between two people?

Quick answerSubtract the earlier birth date from the later one using the same years/months/days algorithm. For example, someone born June 15, 1990 is 3 years, 3 months, 5 days older than someone born September 20, 1993. The Age Difference tab also shows each person's current age and who is older.

Does a leap year affect age calculations?

Quick answerYes — indirectly. A leap year adds February 29, which shifts the total day count and affects how many days a month "borrows" when splitting a date difference into years/months/days. This calculator applies standard Gregorian calendar rules automatically, including for people born on February 29 (whose calendar birthday only occurs in leap years, though their age still increases every year on Feb 28 or Mar 1 depending on local convention).

Age calculation terms glossary

Short definitions of the core terms used in age and date-difference calculations.

Chronological ageAge expressed as completed years (and optionally months/days) since birth — the standard "how old are you" figure.
Date of birth (DOB)The calendar date a person was born, used as the starting point for every age calculation.
Leap yearA year with an extra day (February 29), occurring roughly every 4 years, to keep the calendar aligned with Earth's orbit.
Next birthday countdownThe remaining time until a person's next birth-date anniversary, shown as days:hours:minutes:seconds.
Age differenceThe exact gap in years, months, and days between two people's birth dates.
Total days livedThe number of full days between a birth date and today, an alternative to the years/months/days format.
"As of" dateA target date (other than today) used to calculate what someone's age was, or will be, on that date.
Gregorian calendarThe internationally used calendar (12 months, leap years every 4 years with century exceptions) this calculator's math is based on.

In-depth guides

Step-by-step explanations of the most commonly confused age-calculation questions.

How your exact age is calculated, step by step

Step 1: Subtract the birth year from the target year → 2026 − 1990 = 36.
Step 2: Subtract the birth month from the target month → July (7) − June (6) = 1.
Step 3: Subtract the birth day from the target day → 19 − 15 = 4.
Step 4: If the day or month result is negative, borrow: subtract 1 from the month (or year) and add the appropriate number of days (or 12 months) before continuing.

In this example none of the values are negative, so the final age is simply 36 years, 1 month, 4 days. You can see this instantly by entering June 15, 1990 in the Age tab above.

Chronological age vs. total days lived — which one should you use?

Chronological age (years/months/days) is the calendar-based format used on IDs, medical forms, school enrollment, and legal documents — it's what people mean when they ask "how old are you?" Total days lived is a precise day count of the same span, unaffected by calendar formatting conventions.

Use years/months/days for anything official or age-eligibility related. Use total days lived for novelty milestones (celebrating your 10,000th day), fitness/health data logging, or scientific/statistical contexts where a continuous number is more useful than a calendar breakdown.

Finding your age on a specific past or future date

To find out how old you were on a specific past date, or how old you'll be on a future one, apply the same years/months/days subtraction — but use your chosen date instead of today. For example, someone born March 10, 1985 was exactly 15 years old on March 10, 2000, and will turn 45 on March 10, 2030.

This is commonly used for school-enrollment age cutoffs (many U.S. school districts require a child to turn 5 by a specific date), age-restricted eligibility on a future date, or determining someone's age at a historical event. The Age on a Date tab computes this instantly for any date, past or future.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate age from a date of birth?
Subtract the date of birth from today's date, then split the result into years, months, and days, borrowing from the month or year when the day or month count goes negative (to account for different month lengths and leap years). For example, someone born June 15, 1990 is 36 years, 1 month, and 4 days old as of July 19, 2026.
How old is someone born in 1990?
In 2026, a person born in 1990 is 36 years old if their birthday has already happened that year, or 35 if it hasn't happened yet. The exact age depends on the month and day of birth, not just the year — enter the full date in the calculator above for a precise result.
How do you calculate age as of a specific past or future date?
Use the same year/month/day subtraction used for today's age, but subtract the birth date from the target date instead of from today. This is useful for eligibility cutoffs (e.g. school enrollment), historical figures, or planning how old you'll be on a future date. The "Age on a Date" tab handles this automatically.
How do you calculate the age difference between two people?
Subtract the earlier birth date from the later birth date using the same year/month/day algorithm used for a single age. The result is the exact gap between the two people's ages — for example, someone born in 1990 is 5 years, 4 months, 5 days older than someone born in 1995.
Does a leap year affect an age calculation?
Yes, indirectly. Leap years add an extra day (February 29) roughly every four years, which changes how many days fall between two dates and affects month-length borrowing in the year/month/day breakdown. The calculator applies standard Gregorian calendar rules automatically, so leap years are always handled correctly, including for people born on February 29.
How many days old am I?
Your total days lived is the number of full days between your date of birth and today, calculated as (today − birth date) in days. Someone who is 36 years, 1 month, and 4 days old has lived over 13,000 days. The calculator also converts this into total weeks, hours, and minutes.
Why do total days, weeks, and hours lived differ from my age in years?
Age in years rounds down to the last completed year, while total days lived is an exact day count that includes every partial year, month, and day since birth. Both describe the same span of time — years/months/days is the conventional format used on official documents, while total days is a more precise, granular figure.
Is my birth date sent to a server or stored anywhere?
No. All calculations run entirely in your browser (client-side); no date you enter is transmitted to a server, logged, or stored. The tool works even without an internet connection once the page has loaded.
What's the difference between "age in years" and "total days lived"?
Age in years/months/days is a calendar-based figure used on IDs, forms, and legal documents. Total days lived is a straight day count between your birth date and today, unaffected by calendar conventions. Both are computed from the same birth date; the calculator shows both side by side.
How do you know which generation and zodiac sign you belong to?
Your generation is determined by birth year (for example, Millennials are generally born 1981–1996, Gen Z 1997–2012, and Gen Alpha 2013 onward), while your Western zodiac sign is determined by birth month and day using the standard 12-sign calendar (e.g. Aries runs March 21 – April 19). The Age tab above shows both automatically alongside your exact age.

Methodology & sources

ToolPico's Age Calculator is a free, independent tool. The calculation engine performs every operation with standard Gregorian calendar arithmetic: exact age is found by subtracting the birth date from the target date and splitting the remainder into years / months / days with calendar borrowing for month length and leap years; total days lived is Math.round((target − birth) ÷ 86,400,000 ms); the next birthday is the nearest future occurrence of the birth month and day; and age difference applies the same years/months/days subtraction between two birth dates. Results are computed instantly client-side (in your browser); no data is sent to a server.

Basis: Standard Gregorian calendar rules (12 months, leap years every 4 years with century exceptions). Last updated: July 19, 2026. Results are for informational purposes only and do not constitute legal, medical, or immigration advice; for official age verification, use government-issued identification.
