New: Paste a Full Check Line and Auto-Extract the Routing Number

The routing number checker just got a new input option: paste-and-parse mode. Instead of manually isolating the 9-digit routing number from a check's bottom line, you can now paste the whole MICR-style string — routing number, account number, and check number together — and the tool automatically splits out the routing number and loads it in for checking. Up to now, checking a routing number meant finding the exact 9 digits yourself first — usually by squinting at the bottom-left of a check and carefully selecting just the leftmost group before copying it. That step was the most error-prone part of the whole process, since the MICR line packs routing number, account number, and check number close together with only small symbols separating them.

The new paste-and-parse option removes that manual step. You can now paste the entire bottom line of a check — symbols and all — into a dedicated field, and the checker locates the routing number segment on its own and drops it into the main input, ready to be validated against the ABA checksum exactly as before.

How to use paste-and-parse mode

  1. Find the toggle. On the routing number checker page, just below the example chips and the main "Check routing number" button, there's a dashed-border box labeled "📋 Paste a full MICR line instead?".
  2. Open it. Clicking the toggle expands a second input field, described as accepting "the whole bottom line of a check — routing number, account number, and check number together."
  3. Paste the full line. Drop in the complete string as it appears (or as you've transcribed it) from the check, including any surrounding symbols.
  4. Extract it. Click the "🔎 Extract routing number" button. The 9-digit routing number is pulled out and loaded into the main field above, where it can then be checked with the regular "Check routing number" button.

As with the rest of the tool, this all happens locally in your browser — the full string you paste, including any account or check number digits, is never sent anywhere.

A worked example

Take the illustrative check-line placeholder shown on the page itself: ⑆021000021⑆ 0123456789⑈ 1001. In a real MICR line, that first bracketed group is the bank's 9-digit routing number, the next group is the account number, and the trailing short number is the check number. Instead of manually copying only the first nine digits, pasting the whole string into the new field and clicking extract should isolate 021000021 on its own.

💡Worth doing once: the first time you use paste-and-parse mode with a real check, glance at the extracted number before running the checksum — confirm it's exactly 9 digits and matches the leftmost group you'd expect, the same habit worth having with any auto-extraction step.

Why this was worth adding

Short answerMost real-world routing-number mistakes come from mis-copying the wrong group of digits off a dense check line, not from typos in an already-isolated 9-digit number — so removing the manual-selection step removes a common source of that error.
