Three Things Just Shipped in the Kitchen Measurement Converter — Here's What Changed
A couple of the requests that came up around this tool were specific enough to build directly: an ingredient that isn't on any preset list, a recipe written for a pan you don't own, and getting a result off the screen without retyping it. All three are now live. Here's exactly what was added and how to use each one.
What's new: The ingredient dropdown on the Cup/Spoon → Grams tab now has an "Other / custom ingredient" option at the bottom of the list. Selecting it reveals three fields: a name field, a density-format selector (grams per mL or grams per cup), and a value field for the density itself.
Previously, converting something outside the 24+ built-in presets meant working out the ingredient's density by hand and doing the multiplication yourself — weigh a cup on a kitchen scale, divide by 240, and apply that number manually alongside the tool's other unit conversions. The custom option folds that step into the tool itself: once a density is entered, the converter runs it through the exact same grams = volume (mL) × density (g/mL) formula it already uses for flour, sugar, honey, and everything else on the list, and the result shows up labeled with whatever name was typed in.
Two density formats are accepted: if you know the density as grams per mL directly, enter it that way; if it's easier to state as "1 cup of this weighs X grams," switch the selector to grams per cup instead — the tool converts either input to the same internal density before calculating.
Example scenario: say a recipe calls for 3 tablespoons of a specialty nut butter that isn't in the dropdown, and a kitchen scale shows 1 cup of it weighs about 250 g. Selecting "Other / custom ingredient," naming it, choosing "grams per cup," and entering 250 gives a density of roughly 1.04 g/mL behind the scenes — and 3 tablespoons then converts to about 46 g, the same way any preset ingredient would, without doing the division by hand first.
Pan Size Scaler: resize between round and square pans
What's new: A new "Pan Size Scaler" tab sits alongside the existing Cup/Spoon → Grams, Grams → Cup/Spoon, Ingredient Reference, Oven Temperature, Recipe Scaler, and Ingredient Substitutes tabs. It converts between pan shapes and sizes (round, square, or rectangular), and can optionally rescale a pasted recipe by the area difference between the two pans.
The tab has a "from" pan (shape plus diameter, side length, or width × length) and a "to" pan set up the same way. Switching shape swaps in the right size field automatically — diameter for round, side for square, width × length for rectangular — and the result reports how the two pans compare by area. Below that, an expandable section labeled "Also scale a pasted recipe's ingredient amounts" holds a textarea, pre-filled with a sample recipe, where pasting in real ingredient lines applies the same area ratio to every amount — the same line-by-line multiplication logic the standalone Recipe Scaler tab already uses for servings, just driven by pan area instead.
Why area, not diameter, is what mattersA 9-inch round pan and a 9-inch square pan share the "9-inch" label but not the same capacity: the round pan is about 64 square inches (π × 4.5²) while the square one is 81 square inches, roughly 27% larger. The tab compares actual area rather than the size number printed on the pan, which is the calculation that previously had to be done by hand.
Example scenario: a cake recipe is written for a 9-inch round pan, but the only pan on hand is an 8-inch square one. Setting "from" to round/9 and "to" to square/8 in the Pan Size Scaler tab shows the area ratio directly, and pasting the recipe's ingredient list into the expandable textarea scales every line by that same ratio — skipping the manual πr² step and the multiplication that used to follow it.
Dedicated Print button and native Share
What's new: Every result panel across all seven tabs now has a Print button and a Share button next to the existing Copy button. Print triggers the browser's print dialog using the page's existing print-only stylesheet; Share opens the device's native share sheet (or a Pinterest-style fallback) with a link back to the result.
The print stylesheet itself isn't new — the page has always rendered cleanly on paper, hiding the tab bar, navigation, and buttons via a print media query so only the conversion result and any reference tables show up. What changed is that getting to it no longer requires knowing your browser's print shortcut or digging through a menu: a Print button sits right in the results row, next to Copy, so printing a conversion for the kitchen counter is one click from wherever the result already is.
The Share button covers the other half of that gap. Copying a result and pasting it into a messaging app has always worked, but it's a multi-step process. The new Share button hands the result to the operating system's own share sheet where one is available — the same mechanism apps use to send a link to Messages, WhatsApp, or similar — plus a Pinterest-oriented share option, so sending a conversion to someone else takes one tap instead of a copy-switch-paste sequence.
Example scenario: mid-recipe, with flour-covered hands, tapping Print on the Cup/Spoon → Grams result sends a clean, tab-free printout to a nearby printer for the counter, while tapping Share on the same result opens the phone's share sheet to forward the figure straight to a group chat — both without touching the Copy-and-paste workflow that was previously the only option.
Convert any ingredient — including your own, by density — resize between pans, and print or share the result in one place.
How do I convert an ingredient that isn't in the dropdown now?
Open the Cup/Spoon → Grams tab and choose the new "Other / custom ingredient" option at the bottom of the ingredient dropdown. Two extra fields appear: a name field so the result is labeled correctly, and a density field where you choose grams per mL or grams per cup and type in the value. Enter the unit and quantity as normal and the converter applies the same grams = volume × density formula it uses for every preset ingredient.
Where do I find the pan size converter?
It's the "Pan Size Scaler" tab, alongside Cup/Spoon → Grams, Grams → Cup/Spoon, Ingredient Reference, Oven Temperature, Recipe Scaler, and Ingredient Substitutes at the top of the calculator. Choose the shape (round, square, or rectangular) and size you're converting from, then the shape and size you're converting to.
Can the pan tab also resize my actual recipe, not just tell me the area difference?
Yes. Below the from/to pan fields there's an expandable "Also scale a pasted recipe's ingredient amounts" section with a textarea. Paste a recipe with one ingredient per line and the tab multiplies each amount by the ratio of the two pans' areas, the same way the separate Recipe Scaler tab multiplies by a servings ratio.
Does the Print button do anything different from my browser's own print command?
The Print button calls the same browser print dialog you'd get from a keyboard shortcut or browser menu — it's a shortcut, not a separate feature. What makes it useful is the page's print stylesheet, which was already built to hide the tab bar, share buttons, and navigation so only the clean result and reference tables come out on paper; the button just puts that one tap next to the result instead of requiring you to find it in a browser menu.
What does the Share button actually share?
It uses the device's native share sheet where available — the same system-level share menu apps use to send a link to Messages, WhatsApp, Notes, or similar — with a Pinterest-style fallback share option. It shares a link back to the tool along with the current result, rather than a plain-text copy, which is the job the Copy button already does.
A note on the numbers: Density figures and pan-area comparisons above are illustrative examples used to explain how each feature works, not measured values from a specific product or recipe. Always verify a custom ingredient's density and a pan's actual dimensions against your own kitchen scale or packaging.
