What's New in the Dimensional Weight Calculator: lb+oz Input & Product Gallery
Two small but genuinely useful updates just shipped to the free Dimensional Weight Calculator: a pounds-plus-ounces sub-input for actual weight, and a real-product example gallery that sits next to the existing box-size reference table. Both are live on the tool page right now — here's exactly what changed and how to use each one.
Until now, the Single Package tab only accepted actual weight as a single decimal pound value — so a kitchen or shipping scale reading of, say, 2 lb 8 oz had to be converted by hand before you could type it in (8 ÷ 16 = 0.5, giving 2.5 lb). That conversion step is now optional.
How it worksUnder the Actual weight field on the Single Package tab, there's a new checkbox labeled "Enter as lb + oz instead." Checking it reveals two separate inputs — Pounds and Ounces — so you can type the exact two numbers your scale shows, with no mental math. The calculator converts the pair to the same decimal-pound value it has always used internally, so the DIM weight and billable weight results are identical either way.
This matters most for lighter packages where a few ounces can be the difference between actual weight and DIM weight being close calls. A phone accessory, a small gift, or a lightweight garment might weigh something like 1 lb 6 oz on the scale — previously you'd need to work out that this is 1.375 lb before entering it; now you type 1 in the Pounds field and 6 in the Ounces field and the tool does the rest.
Quick answerThe lb + oz sub-input is a new way to enter actual weight — it does not change how billable weight is calculated. Billable weight is still max(DIM weight, actual weight); the toggle just saves you from converting ounces to a decimal fraction by hand before typing the number in.
New: real-product example gallery
The calculator page already had a generic reference table of DIM weight by box size (12×12×12, 16×12×8, and so on). That table is still there, but it now sits alongside a second, smaller gallery of real-product examples — a large stuffed animal, a boxed laptop, a boxed monitor, and a small appliance — each shown as its own card with approximate box dimensions, actual weight, resulting DIM weight, and which one ends up as the billable weight.

The point of the gallery isn't to give you an exact number for your own shipment — it's a quick, concrete anchor for a pattern that's otherwise easy to explain but hard to picture: bulky-but-light items (like the stuffed animal here) tend to land on DIM weight, while denser items get closer to, or past, their DIM weight on the actual-weight side. Table vs. gallery, at a glance: the box-size table answers "what's the DIM weight for this size box?" in the abstract. The product gallery answers "for a real category of item, which weight actually wins?" Use the table to estimate DIM weight for your own box; use the gallery to sanity-check whether DIM or actual weight is likely to be the bigger number for what you're shipping.
Why these two updates, together
Both updates came from the same place: making it faster to get an accurate actual weight into the calculator, and easier to sanity-check the result once you have it. The lb+oz input removes a manual conversion step on the way in. The product gallery gives you a fast comparison point on the way out, without having to re-derive the DIM-weight-vs-actual-weight logic from scratch every time.
Neither update changes the underlying formula. DIM weight is still (Length × Width × Height, in inches) ÷ divisor, and billable weight is still max(DIM weight, actual weight) — divisor 139 for standard domestic shipments, 166 for some international or air-freight shipments, same as always. These are input and reference improvements, not formula changes.

How do I enter actual weight in pounds and ounces now?
On the Single Package tab, check the "Enter as lb + oz instead" box under the actual weight field. Two inputs appear — Pounds and Ounces — and the calculator converts them to a decimal pound value automatically, the same value it would have used if you had typed a decimal directly.
Do I still need to convert ounces to a decimal fraction myself?
No, not anymore on the Single Package tab. Previously the only way to enter actual weight was as a single decimal pound value, so a kitchen-scale reading like 2 lb 8 oz had to be converted by hand (8 ÷ 16 = 0.5, so 2.5 lb). The new lb + oz toggle does that conversion for you — type the two numbers exactly as your scale shows them.
What products are shown in the new example gallery?

Are the example gallery numbers from real shipments?
No. The product gallery uses illustrative, hypothetical box sizes and weights for common product categories (a stuffed animal, laptop, monitor, small appliance) to show how DIM weight, actual weight, and billable weight typically compare for that kind of item. They are worked examples, not measurements pulled from a specific real product or invoice — use the calculator with your own package's numbers for an exact result.
Does the lb+oz input change how billable weight is calculated?
No. The lb + oz toggle only changes how you enter the actual weight value — it is converted to the same decimal-pound number the calculator has always used internally. The billable weight rule is unchanged: billable weight = max(DIM weight, actual weight), regardless of which input method you used to enter the actual weight.
Methodology note: This guide applies the dimensional (volumetric) weight formula standard across the shipping/logistics industry — DIM weight = (Length×Width×Height, in inches) ÷ divisor — and the industry-standard billable-weight rule of using the greater of DIM weight and actual weight. Product gallery weights and box sizes are hypothetical, illustrative examples, not measurements of specific real products or real carrier invoices. Divisors and per-pound rates vary by carrier, service level, and destination and are not hardcoded here; for your exact shipping cost, confirm current rates and divisors directly with your carrier.
