How Many Days Until Christmas? Countdown & Date Math, Explained
Whether you're timing a shipping deadline, planning a holiday, or just refreshing "how many days until Christmas" for the tenth time this week, the math behind a countdown is simpler than it looks — and knowing it helps you trust the number on screen.
Quick answerDay difference = (end date − start date), converted to days. There are 364 days between January 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026 (365 if you count both end dates). The same span is 52.0 weeks, or roughly 11 months, 30 days.
Under the hood this is just subtraction: convert both dates to a day count and take the difference. What makes a good countdown calculator useful is presenting that single number several useful ways at once — in days, in weeks, and as a calendar-style "years, months, days" breakdown — plus splitting it into weekdays (Monday–Friday) versus weekend days. ToolPico's Countdown Calculator does exactly this in its "Between two dates" tab, and it can also factor in the time of day, so you get a precise days + hours + minutes answer for questions like "how many hours until my flight."

Counting business days (and excluding holidays)
Quick answerTurn on Business-day mode in the "Between two dates" tab, check off the US federal holidays you want excluded — New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and others — and optionally paste your own company-closure dates, one per line. The tool subtracts any of those that land on a weekday from the weekday count.
Plain "weekday" counting already excludes Saturdays and Sundays, which is enough for many quick estimates. But if you're calculating a real deadline — a contract notice period, a return window, or a project delivery date — you usually need actual business days, which also skip recognized holidays. This is where the built-in holiday checklist and custom-exclusion textarea in ToolPico's calculator come in: floating holidays like Thanksgiving and Memorial Day are calculated automatically from their weekday rule (no need to remember the exact date each year), and any custom dates you add — say, a company's floating holiday or an office closure — get factored in too, as long as they fall within your date range.
As an example scenario: a company with a 10-business-day return policy starting on a Wednesday right before a federal holiday weekend would land on a slightly later calendar date than a naive "add 10 days" count — because the holiday and the weekend both get skipped.
Running a live countdown to a holiday
Quick answerTap a ready-made chip — New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas — in the Countdown tab, and the tool shows the remaining days, hours, minutes, and seconds, updating every second. Fixed-date holidays like Christmas use the same calendar date each year; floating ones like Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November) are computed automatically.
A live countdown is really the same subtraction as above — target date minus right now — just recalculated continuously and displayed down to the second. It's a nice way to build anticipation for an event, keep a shared deadline visible on a shared screen, or simply confirm at a glance exactly how much runway is left before a deadline. Once you've calculated a countdown, you can also add it straight to your calendar as an .ics file, which opens in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or Outlook as an all-day event — handy for turning "how many days until Christmas" into an actual reminder on your phone.
Adding or subtracting days from a date
Quick answerEnter a starting date, choose add or subtract, pick an amount and a unit (day, week, month, or year), and the tool returns the resulting date plus the day of the week it falls on. As one example: adding 90 days to July 19, 2026 gives October 17, 2026, a Saturday.
This direction of the math answers a different everyday question: not "how far apart are these two dates," but "what date do I land on if I move forward or back from here." It's useful for things like estimating a due date 90 days out, checking what a "net 30" invoice term means on the calendar, or figuring out what date it was a certain number of weeks ago. Because the result also names the weekday, you immediately know whether that date falls on, say, a Saturday — which matters if you were assuming a business day.

How do you calculate the number of days between two dates?
The day difference is found by subtracting the start date from the end date and converting the result to days. For example, there are 364 days between January 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026 (365 days if you count both end dates). The tool also shows the difference in weeks, months, and years, and splits it into weekdays and weekend days.
How do you calculate business days excluding holidays?
In the "Between two dates" tab, turn on "Business-day mode." Check the US federal holidays you want excluded (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and others), and optionally add your own company-closure dates, one per line. The tool then subtracts any of those dates that fall on a weekday from the weekday count and shows the resulting business-day total.
How many days until Christmas or Thanksgiving?
Tap the Christmas or Thanksgiving chip in the Countdown tab to see the remaining time live. Christmas is always December 25; Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, so its exact date shifts by a few days each year — the tool calculates it automatically.
How do you add or subtract days from a date?
Enter a starting date in the "Add / Subtract Days" tab, choose add or subtract, enter an amount, and pick a unit (day, week, month, or year). The tool returns the result date and the day of the week it falls on. As one example, adding 90 days to July 19, 2026 gives October 17, 2026 (a Saturday).
Does the countdown tool store or send my dates anywhere?
No. All calculations run entirely in your browser; the dates you enter are never sent to a server. The only way a calculation becomes shareable is if you tap "Copy link," which encodes your inputs into the page URL — sharing that link is entirely up to you.
A note on the numbers: the examples above use illustrative dates to show how the calculation works and are not a substitute for checking the exact figure for your own situation. Floating-holiday dates and calendar-based estimates can vary by a day depending on the year and jurisdiction — for legal, payroll, or business deadlines, confirm the exact date on an official calendar.
